The amounts are relatively small. $88, $300, $173. A month’s wireless service so he can continue his job search. A replacement part to keep a used car safe and running for her restaurant delivery job. An old LG&E bill that has to be cleared before there is a utility hookup in their new apartment.

Those are just a few of the direct assistance requests we received this year. These, and so many others like them, illustrated time and again the oft-cited fact that 40 percent of Americans are not able to cover an unexpected $400 expense. And, if 2020 was nothing else, it was a year of the unexpected.

For the 40 percent who were already financially vulnerable — and for the countless more who have joined their ranks as a result of this year of crisis — we can expand their possibilities by removing relatively small stumbling blocks that encumber the path.
