Juneteenth (JFCS Office Closed)
Juneteenth is celebrated as a holiday because it commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and free the last enslaved Black Americans in the Confederate states—more than two years after the Emancipation was initially issued.
