Today’s post written by Judy Freundlich Tiell, Executive Director.
Bringing a child into your family through adoption is a decision with life long implications. Part of the adoption process is educating families to think about these issues – we use a combination of curricula in our classes for adoptive families but the topics really relate to loss, attachment, identity and multiracial/multiethnic understanding. Families welcome the opportunity to talk with other families and think through these issues prior to bringing home their children. Learning how to talk about adoption and how children understand adoption at various ages gives parents very specific tools to use – we also, via dvd, get to hear from teenagers who were adopted describe what they remember and how they experienced the process. All of this helps to make adoptions more successful.
Starting next week, we offer two workshops for parents thinking about beginning the adoption process! Find out more at our homepage, or call for more information, (502) 452-6341.
