The 2011 Mosaic Awards offered not only a chance to recognize this year’s honorees, but to once again present a scholarship to an outstanding New American pursuing a career in health care.
This year’s recipient is Sunita Gurung. A native of Nepal, Sunita immigrated to the United States in 2006 specifically to pursue a nursing degree and the quality of the education available in this country. She was drawn to Louisville to attend Jefferson Community & Technical College where she could affordably obtain an Associate Degree in Science and Art, and then move on to nursing school.
This fall, 27-year-old Sunita will begin her nursing degree program at Spalding University. She said that the scholarship she receives will alleviate a great burden as she has been working three jobs. Balancing that work schedule with demanding class work, coupled with trying to master the English language, has been a great challenge.
JHHS and the Jeff and Phyllis Osbourn Scholarship Fund are proud to provide aid to an immigrant or refugee pursuing a career in nursing or other high-demand health care field. This is the fifth year they have made this presentation at the Mosaic Awards, making a difference in the life of promising student—and the countless patients she will touch in the course of her career.
Congratulations to Sunita Gurung on her $5,000 Scholarship from the Osbourn Educational Endowment and Jewish Hospital HealthCare Services! Best of luck in your studies from all of us here at JFCS!
