Making Passover a Community Mitzvah

Written by Amber Fuller, JFCS Engagement and Social Media Intern

It’s time to get ready for Passover Louisville! With Passover just a few weeks away, Jewish families are busy getting ready for Seder meals and special Kosher for Passover foods. The Mcmahan Kroger is widely known for having the largest kosher selection in Louisville, but the Prospect, Holiday Manor Krogers and even Whole Foods has started carrying more kosher options in recent years. Some families make treks to larger cities such as Chicago and Cincinnati in search of Kosher for Passover options.

As part of our mission, JFCS assists members of the community each year in fulfilling the mitzvah of commemorating the Exodus from Egypt. Last year JFCS provided Kosher Passover Baskets to 35 Jewish families and 10 Jewish seniors. These baskets include matzah, gefilte fish, matzo ball soup ingredients, sweets and other holiday essentials.

To ensure that we have enough Kosher for Passover foods for this year’s baskets,  JFCS kicked off the holiday’s food drive with their first annual Supermarket Scavenger Hunt at the Prospect Kroger. Families wore costumes, solved clues and shopped for Passover foods to donate to the food pantry. Not only did were they able to donate over 150 pounds of food, but they were also able to raise awareness about the pantry and other helpful services provided by JFCS to curious Kroger shoppers and employees.

Each year during the Holiday of Passover, our local community joins with Jewish communities around the world in reading the Haggadah. We declare “All who are hungry, let them come and eat.” You can help by donating Kosher for Passover products before April 3rd to help Jewish members of our community who may not otherwise be able to observe this holiday. JFCS needs your help to ensure that everyone in the community can celebrate Passover with joy and dignity.

We still need:

  • Cans of Macaroons
  • Matzo Ball Soup Mix
  • Canned Matzo Ball Soup
  • Boxes of Matzah
  • Kosher for Passover Candies
  • Jarred Gefelte Fish
  • Kosher for Passover Grape Juice

Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated.
