Connecting Communities

A Roman philosopher once said, “ Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” Connecting Communities, a new program from JFCS’s Navigate Enterprise Center, exemplifies this message by turning the preparation we do with our clients every day into an opportunity to create life-changing experiences.

Through a bit of luck, JFCS began working with the Fund for the Arts NeXt Arts Team, which consults with local nonprofits on arts projects. We conceptualized a program where two populations we serve at JFCS, refugee/immigrant and senior women, could come together — through art — to reflect on shared experiences such as social isolation, financial insecurity, and the need for a creative outlet.

With generous funding through the Louisville Youth Philanthropic Council, we offered three workshops where participants met and created art together. They also learned from local artists Ramona Lindsey, Brianna Harlan, LaNia Roberts and Fahime Seifi about how artists use their respective art mediums to express their own personal journeys. In addition to the displaying and discussing their work in a gallery setting at the Art Showcase on Thursday, June 13, the women have the option of continuing to create art and even expand into a small business with help from Navigate Enterprise Center and our partner retail locations.

Connecting Communities represents the best of what JFCS does every day : providing skills-building resources, comfort, encouragement, and support to all populations in our communities, at any stage of life. These women took a leap of faith with us and came through the other side with powerful shared experiences, new friendships, and artistic abilities that will enhance their lives moving forward.

Connecting Communities culminates in our first Art Showcase on Thursday, June 13. This free public event will be held at 7 Lettersong (1501 Story Ave.) The evening includes a discussion with the participants and artists about the process and experience. Join us to see these beautiful works in person and learn more about this exciting program.
