According to Deloitte’s Back to School Survey for 2016 and 2017, parents need to spend almost $400 just for school supplies and required clothing.
For low-income and refugee families, this is nearly an impossible task without the support of organizations like JFCS. In 2016, we planned for 100 students to utilize our first-ever pop-up store, but 150 students came to shop! Last year we saw a steady increase in need to more than 160 students. This year, we hope to provide school supplies to more than 200 K-12 students in the Louisville Metro area.
Back to School Supply Drive and Shoppe: Throughout the month of July each year JFCS holds it’s annual Back to School Supply Drive. We collect all of the necessary basic supplies our low-income and immigrant clients need to send their children to school. In the shoppe, these students along with their parents select school supplies to ensure that they start the school year prepared for their academics.
Back to School Bash: The Back to School Bash is the signature event for our VIALou group. Young Professionals come together as volunteers to learn about the needs of low-income and immigrant families and to spend a few hours to stock and set-up our Back to School Supply Shoppe. Last year we expanded our school supply drive in order to support over 150 kids. We expect that this year this number will increase again as more and more supply drives are disappearing. Here is a list of supplies that are needed this year, you can also make a monetary donation and we will do the shopping for you.
