When economic conditions are soft and job opportunities are harder to come by, people often stay in school or return to school for additional credentialing. Officials at different schools around the country confirm that this trend is indeed now occurring. Applications for various programs are up and the number of Americans taking the GRE last fall rose 20 percent from the prior year.
